the differnce between marketing and advertising

What is the difference between marketing and advertising? well for starters the defintion for marketing is the total of activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling. And for advertising is the act or practice of calling public attention to one's product, service, need, etc., esp. by paid announcements in newspapers and magazines, over radio or television, on billboards, etc.: to get more customers by advertising. That being understood one can see how marketing deals more with ligistics and advertising deals more with getting the word out there. "(A marketer who knows where the money is knows where the markets are.)"charles W. Lamb MKTG PG 100. Makes sense doesnt it I would agree. But advertising still falls into the category of marketing but marketing is the foundation of advertising. One would think that advertisint and marketing are the same but they are not.
